Pacific / Pasifika education.
Welcome to Niu Space
Are you a newcomer to Pacific education research? Are you working on either your Honours, or Masters research? Are you supervising a student who is doing research in Pacific education?
This website introduces newcomers to the field and scholarship of Pacific/Pasifika education. It introduces the socio-historical-economic context within which Pasifika education and research has developed in Aotearoa New Zealand, Pasifika research ethics, principles and methodologies. We created Niu Space because of the limited opportunities in our faculty for in-depth study of Pacific/Pasifika education and Pasifika research methodologies.
Niu Space is sponsored by the Pacific Education and Learning Network (PERL). The Niu Space development Team is led by Dr Tanya Wendt Samu with assistance from Dr Rebeca Consejo y Chapela, Easter Faasoo-Tuilagi and Carol Mulcahy. They are located in School of Critical Studies in Education (CRSTIE), University of Auckland.

- Postgraduate students will develop stronger contextual knowledge and understanding against which to frame and develop their research topics
- Colleagues who want to advocate and support Pasifika education (both the field and their academic colleagues within it) can strengthen their own knowledge and understanding thereby refining the vigour of their advocacy in faculty committees and processes such as postgraduate, research and ethics
- Enhance the value (and acceptance) of Pasifika research methodologies, and strengthen this field of study and scholarship
- Reduce instances of this particular form of invisible labour (and unrecognized workload) of staff with expertise in Pasifika education research
